With skincare, there are endless products and regimen options to choose from. It can be hard to know where to start, especially if you’re on a budget. Having a skincare routine is an essential part of taking care of your skin, and trust me when I tell you – it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are 5 tips to help you build an effective skincare routine without sacrificing quality or your budget. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for ways to save money, these tips will help you get the most out of your skincare routine without having to spend a fortune. These tips will help you find the best affordable skincare products for your unique needs.
A good skincare routine should consist of at least with a cleanser, exfoliate or treat, moisturize and most importantly SPF. If this sounds overwhelming, there’s one beneficial step you can make immediately: switching your cleanser. Now, before I start with product recommendations here are the 5 most important steps
1.Evaluate and learn more about your skin type and concerns – It may sound scary at first read, nut it really isn’t!It’s important to understand your skin type and any concerns you have before you start building a skincare routine. Skin types can range from normal, combination, oily, or dry and knowing your skin type will help you determine the best products to use. To determine your skin type and any skin concerns, you can do a quick self-assessment in the mirror.Additionally, if you have any particular skin concerns such as acne, redness, dark circles, or dullness, it’s important to be aware of these as well so you can purchase the most effective products for your individual needs.
2. Do your research – take the time to ”turn and learn”. Look at the ingredients, don’t take the front label as a rule. Most often brands will use words or one ingredient to make you think you need their whole range. Look up each ingredient online to learn what they are, their effects on the skin, and how they interact with other ingredients. *Side note – I am a big fan of the app Picky for these types of checks, so come and join a huge community of beauty-obsessed and you can even collect points and apply to test products. 3.Start with the basics – don’t go out of your way to buy a bag of products that you simply don’t need and will likely cause you even more purging.
4.Don’t forget to follow up with sunscreen – This may sound to some of you like a broken record, but you have to remember SPF is the most important piece in your skincare routine and makeup bag. Everything else is secondary to sunscreen, so if you’re not wearing an SPF when you leave the house, you may as well be naked (because technically, that’s what you are).
5.Be Patient
Back in the ‘olden’ days, when I started my skincare and sometimes hair journey (thanks James) I liked to think of it as prevention rather than ‘cure’. Just as doctors recommend eating right and exercising regularly to prevent disease and illness, the same can be said for our complexion. With so many impurities in our environment — such as pollution and dirt — even people with clear complexions need to take preventive measures against the formation of wrinkles and sunspots. With that said it is recommended by most Derms not to change your products 6 weeks after starting them, unless you get an allergic reaction.
Cleansers
A good cleanser is the foundation of any skincare routine. Choose a gentle, non-irritating, pH balanced cleanser to remove dirt, makeup, and other pollutants that build up on your skin during the day.
It might take some time to find the right option, but since cleansing is such a vital step when ensuring good skin health, it’s worth your while finding something gentle that works with most of your other beauty staples in an effort to create a routine that won’t confuse your skin further. Below you’ll find what I would recommend alongside with some of my favourite derms and skincare fanatics stand by and which product options are best for different types of skin.
A good classic cleanser is an easy way to reach maximum skin happiness – or at least finding the perfect cleanser was a game changer for me!
Exfoliator
I’m not going to lie—it’s a little disappointing when we have dry, rough, textured skin and no matter what we do to tackle it, nothing seems to work. But while we often see exfoliation as a sign of aging or dryness, it can be just as useful for a range of other skin concerns.Exfoliating is one of the most important cleansing steps in my routine, so it’s worth getting a product for your skin type and targeted concerns. Exfoliation helps to slough off dead skin cells and reveal fresh, new skin underneath. Exfoliation doesn’t need to be done daily, even so most exfoliators recommend starting them on a once or twice weekly basis. If you’re looking for a new exfoliant, but you don’t know where to start, I’ve rounded up five great options—all at different price points, too. Treatment
Googling skin targeted treatments for yourself is the easiest way to discover some at-home solutions that might just clear up your problem or cause even more. And trust me, there are plenty of home remedies out there – while you should always consult with a dermatologist before trying anything at home, I’m here to tell you some of the most popular and tried-and-true tricks that have been circulating around the internet. They could give you the clear path to the treatments you’ve been looking for.
Treatments for specific skin concerns work well for those of us that aren’t using over-the-top cleansers to strip our skin. If you have acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, dehydration and expression lines, blemishes or sensitive skin there are treatments designed specifically to smooth out your complexion. I love the idea of a targeted approach because it’s easier on your wallet while still getting the same results.
Moisturiser
I don’t think I need to tell you how good moisturizer is for your skin and just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you can’t use a moisturiser. Moisturizer brings hydration and helps maintain the skin’s barrier, preventing dryness and dullness. When you’re shopping for moisturizer, understanding what not to buy can save you from some major skincare and wallet regrets. The right formula matters and these recommendations will help you find it.
SPF
Sun protection is becoming increasingly important as we learn more about the effects of ultraviolet light. And even if you’re not convinced there are any long-term effects, most people would agree that their skin will thank them for applying a little SPF before hitting the outdoor world. And, if you still have doubts about the use of sun protection, look at this striking photo of a 69 years old man who for 28 years was a truckdriver. Can you guess which side was facing the window?
The best part is that SPF comes in many forms—there are creams, lotions, serums and powders. Your options are so plentiful that there’s no excuse not to have this anti-aging powerhouse on your face and body. If you don’t know where to start, here are some of my favourites that I tested out myself.
