The Controversies Recap

How did an indie makeup brand like Lime Crime go from a dreadful topic in the beauty community to being a mainstream brand carried in Ulta, Urban Outfitters, Boots, Sephora?

AD

LC’s founder Doe Deere — then going by Xenia Vorotova first launched Lime Crime Clothing line and was accused of stealing several designs from designers and creators. Later on she wore a Halloween costume of  Adolf Hitler and what most made her fans and audience mad was her statement that she wanted ”to test how much she could get away with”, which to be honest goes in the top of worse influencer apologies/statements.

In 2008 Doe launched LC and safe to say the brand shook the indie makeup community with it’s bright and bold colours. Later members of the indie beauty community began to accuse the brand of repackaging cheap mica pigments and reselling them with huge profits, but the brand nor owner never admitted any fault.

Doe was known in the blogosphere at the time to argue with bloggers and allegedly send out cease and deceits letters to stop negative reviews. In 2010 Lime crime did the pettiest response to a review that Temptalia did on their lipsticks.

The brand was also accused later on for cultural appropriation with their release of ”Chinadoll palette”.. ?! Later on Sephora somehow decided to pick them up and a few weeks after carrying them, they decided to drop the brand due to a number of customer complaints. We continue 2014 with more lawsuits, security breaches and the cherry on top was an FDA warning.

So how on earth is this brand still around? Long story short in 2017 Doe relinquishes control and Kim Walls was promoted to Global GM. Walls brought the brand in Cult beauty, Ulta, Riley Rose and expanded to Revolve with the ability to sell in China and keep it’s cruelty-free status.

In 2018 the brand was bought by Tengram Capital Partners. The brand, used to have a an official controversies page on their website, but it seems to have been removed.

Thanks for reading! I hope this blog post has given you an idea of what to expect from the brand and make an informed decision when purchasing. Be sure to check out their website to see all of our recent posts!
